Meghalaya: Kiren Rijiju inaugurates synthetic football ground in Shillong

Meghalaya, Jan 4: Union Minister of State for Sports and Youth Affairs – Kiren Rijiju on Monday inaugurated a synthetic football ground at Sports Authority of India (SAI) training centre in Shillong.

Addressing the gathering, Rijiju said that Meghalaya and the other North Eastern States have a huge potential in producing athletes to compete in national and international events. The development of various sporting infrastructure plays an important role in honing the skills of athletes.

Kiren Rijiju also inaugurated a synthetic athletic track and field ground at the SAI Training Centre.

Stating that the development of sports has recently been added as a subject of priority under the North Eastern Council, he urged the state’s youngsters to approach the Council in availing the various sporting facilities available.

During the programmed, Rijiju said, “Developing sporting infrastructure at the grassroot level is a step towards achieving sporting excellence in the long run”.

Moreover, along with the synthetic football ground in Shillong, Rijiju also inaugurated a Khelo India School at the Assam Rifles Public School (ARPS) in Shillong.

The Khelo India School is the first ever sports school in the Northeast.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has thanked Kiren Rijiju for “upgrading sports infra in the Northeast”.

Others present at the event were East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo, W A M Booth, Director of Sports & Youth Affairs, Meghalaya, Sylvester Nongtnger, SP, East Khasi Hills, Subhas Basumatary, SAI, Regional Director, NER among others.
