Kolkata, May 02: The West Bengal Assembly election 2021 result will be declared today (May 2) as the counting of votes begins at 8 am. Despite the election, held amid a raging Covid-19 pandemic, dragging on for over a month, voter enthusiasm hardly showed any sign of waning. In one of the most grueling and arguably the most bitterly fought polls in a long time, an estimated around 80 percent of over 84.77 lakh voters exercised their franchise in Bengal.

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Mamata Banerjee as TMC heads for a landslide victory in West Bengal. PM Modi also added that the Centre will extend all possible support to the state government to overcome the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • The Trinamool Congress has claimed that counting of votes has not been completed for the final round in Nandigram.

  • Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday congratulated “Bengal tigress” and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for “single-handedly” leading her party to victory in the West Bengal Assembly polls. The TMC was leading in over 200 of the 292 seats that went to polls in the eastern state.
  • In a massive twist in the battle for Nandigram, Mamata Banerjee concedes defeat as BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari wins with a vote margin of 1,957 votes. Mamata Banerjee said she will accept people’s mandate in Nandigram, but the TMC chief added that she will move the court against the Election Commission after the EC retracted its statement almost an hour after announcing Mamata Banerjee as winner.

  • The Election Commission on Sunday told political parties that its ban on victory processions during and after counting of votes is being flouted, and asked them to restrain their workers from violating Covid-19 guidelines. The EC wrote to the heads of recognised parties about its instructions being ignored, amid reports of party workers holding celebrations in states where counting of votes is underway.

  • Partha Chatterjee of the TMC is leading with over 2000 votes in Behala Paschim after the first round of counting. BJP’s Srabanti Chatterjee is trailing in this seat.

  • Bengal minister Firhad Hakim is leading from the Kolkata Port constituency. Actor Kanchan Mallick, a TMC candidate, leading from Uttarpara. At Chandannagar, Bengal minister Indranil Sen is leading with 2,900 votes after the completion of the second round of counting.

  • After two rounds of counting in Bengal’s Nandigram seat, Suvendu Adhikari is leading over Mamata Banerjee with 4,997 votes.

West Bengal Assembly Election

  •  In Chanditala seat in West Bengal, actor Yash Dasgupta is so far trailing by 499 votes, according to the Election Commission website. TMC’s Swati Khandoker is leading on the seat.
  • Now Suvendu Adhikari is leading with 7,287 votes in Nandigram against Mamata Banerjee who has got 5,790 votes so far in the first round.
  • The TMC and challenger BJP were Sunday locked in a neck-and-neck contest in West Bengal as counting of postal ballots was underway, with the ruling party having a slight edge, officials said.
