Thunderstorms

Delhi, April 27: A fresh feeble western disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan Region from today onwards, causing isolated rainfall/snowfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds over the upper reaches of Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit, Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand during 28th-30th April, as per the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Isolated light rainfall is also expected over the adjoining plains of north Punjab, north Haryana, and north Uttar Pradesh on 29th and 30th April, whereas isolated thunderstorms and dust storms (speed reaching 40-50 kmph) will affect the west and north Rajasthan on 29th and 30th April.

Further, a North-South through runs from the eastern parts of Bihar to south Tamil Nadu across Jharkhand, interior Odisha, Vidarbha, Telangana, and Rayalaseema in lower levels. Under its influence, scattered to fairly widespread thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are very likely over Kerala and Mahe, while isolated to scattered rainfall and thunderstorms may lash the remaining parts of Peninsular, West, and East India during the next 3-4 days. Isolated heavy rains are particularly possible over north Kerala on 28th & 29th April.

Meanwhile, due to wind convergence supported by moisture feed from the Bay of Bengal, isolated to scattered rainfall with isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds are on the cards over Northeast India during the next 24 hours. The intensity and distribution of the conditions are likely to increase during the subsequent two days. Isolated heavy rainfall has been forecast over Assam and Meghalaya on 30th April.

Heatwave conditions are on the cards over isolated pockets of Gujarat state, Odisha, and Gangetic West Bengal on 27th April.

As for the mercury levels, maximum temperatures of 40°C or more are likely over north India in this period. Moreover, the maximum temperatures will be below normal across the east coasts of Eastern and Southern India, but slightly higher over the Western Himalayan Region and North Eastern India in this period.

On the other hand, the minimum temperatures will be slightly lower over Central India and the adjoining areas in this period. Other areas will be near normal or slightly warmer.
