Two youths drown in the Ganges while making stunt video on Vidyasagar bridge

Kolkata, Feb 8: Two young men drowned in the Ganges while making a stunt video on Vidyasagar bridge with their friends. One was later rescued but the other youth has not been found yet, police said.  According to police sources, several youths went to make a stunt video on the second Hooghly Bridge.

Two of them climbed to the top of the railing, the rest stood behind and recorded videos on their mobile phones. After that, two youths residents of Tiljala area jumped into the Ganges from the top of the railing of the bridge. A viral video clearly shows the jumping scene.

According to police sources, one of the two youths who jumped into the Ganges, Md Zakir Sardar, 21, and another friend, Md Tastigir Alam, are both residents of Tiljala area of Kolkata. After jumping into the Ganges from the bridge on Sunday afternoon, two friends drowned in the Ganges within moments.

After receiving the news, the river traffic department of Kolkata police started a search operation. Police rescued Md Tastigir Alam in a search operation. He was then handed over to South Port Police Station.

After initial treatment, he was handed over to his family, police said. However, their other friend Zakir Sardar has not been found yet.

 As soon as this incident came to light, questions were raised about the security arrangements of this important bridge-like Vidyasagar Bridge. Questions are also being raised about the police surveillance on the bridge.

Because usually no one is allowed to stand on such a bridge. The bridge is always patrolled by the traffic police. The bridge was also monitored by CCTV cameras. Even then, the question has arisen as to how the two youths claimed on a railing in broad daylight and jumped into the Ganges without being noticed by the police.
