Tripura Police books Abhishek Banerjee, other top TMC leaders for 'obstructing police duty'

Tripura, August 11: Tripura Police have lodged an FIR against TMC MPs Abhishek Banerjee, Dola Sen and other top party leaders for “obstruction of police personnel” from carrying on with their duty.

Apart from Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, Bengal minister Bratya Basu and party spokesperson Kunal Ghosh have also been booked by Tripura Police.

The FIR states that following the arrest of 14 TMC leaders and workers on Sunday morning, a group of party workers led by minister Bratya Basu and MP Dola Sen reached the Khowai police station. Soon, Abhishek Banerjee also reached the station.

The police have stated that the group of TMC leaders misbehaved with the Additional SP and other police personnel and also shouted at them. Tripura Police have now booked the top TMC leaders for misbehaving with the Additional SP and SDPO of Khowai and obstructing police personnel from discharging duty.

Last week, Abhishek Banerjee and TMC activists were attacked in separate incidents in Tripura, where the party is looking to expand its base ahead of the 2023 assembly elections.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had alleged that the recent attacks on Abhishek Banerjee and others in Tripura were done “on the instructions” of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and asserted that such acts “will not cow her down“.

However, West Bengal BJP termed the charge as “baseless” and said that going by Mamata Banerjee’s logic she should be blamed for post-poll violence and murder of its workers in the state.
