Meghalaya, Dec 13: One person was injured in an explosion in the factory of Star Cement at Lumshnong in East Jaiñtia Hills district of Meghalaya.
The explosion borked out in the workers’ residential Krishna colony lane-3 inside Star Cement premises at Lumshnong area, a police official said.
The East Jaintia Hills superintendent of police (SP) Deepak Kumar Palecha rushed to Lumshnong from Khliehriat to take stock of the situation.
“One worker of the Star Cement had sustained minor injury and two rooms were partially damaged due to the explosion,” he said.
The SP said that they are investigating to ascertain the exact cause of the explosion.
This is the second incident of an explosion at Star Cement factory in Jaiñtia Hills after an explosion at Sookilo. Star Cement is one of the large cement manufacturers in Northeast India.
The plant spread across 200 hectares of land in Lumshnong is situated along National Highway-44 and 135 km from Shillong towards Silchar in Jaintia Hills.
The cement manufacturer has decided to invest Rs 4.5bn (US$61m) in Bengal through the construction of its new 2Mta grinding unit.
Star Cement currently has a manufacturing capacity of 4Mta, which is expected to increase to 6Mta after completion of the project. The Bengal plant will be supplied with clinker from the company’s works in Meghalaya.
The cement major had made headlines in September after the factory of the company reported 58 Covid-19 positive cases.
The Meghalaya government was reportedly contemplating closure of the cement plant after the detection of COVID-19 positive cases through random sampling.
