Aizwal, June 16: Mizoram on Wednesday reported 268 new covid-19 cases, pushing the state’s tally to 15,899, an official said.

The death toll rose to 71 as a 92-year-old woman from Sairang Dinthar in Aizawl district succumbed to the infection at 6:30 pm on Tuesday evening.

At least 2,443 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, and the positivity rate was at 10.97 percent, he said.

As many as 213 fresh cases were detected through Rapid Antigen Test, 53 through RT-PCR, and two cases through TruneNat method, he said, adding that 134 of the new patients were asymptomatic.

Of the 268 new cases, 221 were reported from the Aizawl district, followed by Lunglei (16), Kolosib (12), Siaha, and Lawngtlai (6) each, (3) each from Champhai and Saitual and Mamit district.

There are 3,637 active cases in the state at present, while 12,191 people have recovered including 312 on Tuesday. The state has so far tested 4,38,999 samples for COVID-19.

According to state immunization officer Dr. Lalzawmi, 2,99,068 people have been administered the first dose of COVID-19 vaccine till Monday. Of these, 53,245 people have received both doses.
