Mizoram: Lengpui Airport braces up to welcome passengers
June 1, 2020: The chief minister of Mizoram, Zoramthanga had said,” Upgradation of Lengpui Airport is in full swing during the lockdown imposed to contain the coronavirus outbreak.” in April.
The task of renovation of the runway and repairing of the road between the landing area and the terminal building was undertaken then.
The officials of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) donated a sum of Rs 10 lakh to the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) to fight Covid-19.
The Mizoram Horticulture Officers and Staff Welfare Association and about 300 employees of State Bank of India (SBI) donated Rs 8.3 lakh and Rs 7 lakh respectively to the CMRF. The Mizoram Horticulture Officers and Staff Welfare Association contributed by offering their one day’s salary previously. The donations had amounted to a total of Rs 2.5 lakh rupees.
The Airport is expected to be able to cater to 300 incoming and outgoing passengers.
“Lengpui Airport is all set to welcome the passengers. Strict measures will be taken”, said Health Minister Dr R.Lalthangliana.On his visit to Lengpui Airport on May 30, Dr R. Lalthangliana said that Lengpui Airport is the fourth airport to have a Thermal and Optical Bi-Spectrum camera.
He informed that through this equipment, they will easily be able to detect whether a traveller who is landing in Aizawl has a fever or not. After going through the thermal and optical bi-spectrum camera, the passenger will go through a rapid antibody test.
“We have stopped using the airport for a long time due to the lockdown but now that airlines are going to start functioning again, we have to be very careful,” said Dr R. Lalthangliana.
The Health Minister also handed over supplies including 599 masks each, 500 gloves each, 20-litre hand sanitizers each, 100 N95 masks each, 100 Rapid test kits each to Lengpui Airport and Lengpui Public Health Centre.
The Minister said,” If there is any passenger who is suspected to have the virus, they can take a sample at the airport on the spot.” Such arrangements have been made ensuring absolute safety for anyone who enters the airport area. This is an extremely reassuring expression as he announces their level of preparedness in terms of welcoming the passengers.
