Imphal, June 19: A team of ENT surgeons of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Manipur’s Imphal had successfully conducted surgery and treated a post-Covid patient who was suffering from black fungus or Mucormycosis.
In a press release issued by RIMS  media advisor, N Phillip Singh said that the team of surgeons comprising Prof Th Sudhiranjan, Dr. O Priyokumar, and Dr. N Jiten Singh and an anesthetist team led by Prof L Pradip and Dr. Eshori Longjam conducted the surgery.
“The surgery was performed in the nose and paranasal sinuses of the patient. During the surgery, mucormycosis was found to have involved in the right maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinuses, middle and inferior turbinates, posterior part of the nasal septum. Sphenoid sinus was found to be oedematous but clear of gross disease. The lamina papyracea (thin wall separating orbit and nasal cavity) and floor of the brain was found to be intact,” said in the release.
The media advisor to RIMS also said that all parts involved by the mucormycosis were cleared in the surgery and the patient is now stable after the surgery.
Earlier, the doctors of RIMS had successfully conducted an operation when a cancer patient developed black fungus.
