Manipur: First primary school opens in hamlet in 48 years

Manipur, 3rd December: Varangalai, a small hamlet in Manipur’s Ukhrul district has got a government primary school for the first time.

Children from the hamlet have been attending schools in Ukhrul town as there were no school, which is situated about 32 kilometres away.

The government school building was inaugurated by Chingai MLA Khashim Vashum.

The six-room building of the primary school has been constructed by local councillor Paothing Vashum with the State Fund-2019-20 of the district council.

The hamlet with only 36 houses, is within the jurisdiction of the Phungcham village in the district.

Though the hamlet was established in 1972, it has seen no development even after so many years.

The hamlet is in need of many basic facilities, including a supply of clean drinking water round the clock.

We have been sending our children to Ukhrul town for the past 40 years in absence of a school in Varangalai,” a report quoted Ningkhan Pheirei, local chairman of Varangalai.

We have been facing a lot of economic hardship because of this,” he said.
