JEE (Mains) topper in Assam arrested for allegedly using proxy for exam

Guwahati, 29th October: Assam police had arrested the topper of the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) in Assam, his father and three others for allegedly using a proxy candidate to write JEE (Mains) entrance examination in Guwahati in September.

The son of the doctor achieved top rank from Assam in the entrance examination with a score of 99.8 per cent without sitting for the examination.

The arrested persons were identified as Dr Jyotirmoy Das, his son Neel Nakshatra Das, Hamendra Nath Sarma, Pranjal Kalita and Hirukamal Pathak.

According to the reports, a person named Mitradev Sharma – a resident of Mathura Nagar in Guwahati had recently lodged a complaint at Azara police station under Guwahati city police against the topper of JEE (Mains) examination from Assam and police started investigation.

In connection with a case (no – 624/2020) has been registered at Azara police station under sections 120(B)/419/420/406 of IPC and R/W 66D of IT Act.

Rajib Saikia, CPRO of Assam police said that, police on Wednesday had arrested five persons in connection with the case.

On the other hand, Guwahati city police Commissioner Munna Prasad Gupta said that, the candidate used a proxy candidate to write examination through the help of another agency.

Our investigation is on and staffers of the examination centre might also be involved with it. We are searching to nab all persons who involved with it,” the top cop said.

On the other hand, the complainant alleged that the father of the candidate had paid a huge sum of money for this purpose.
