Dispur, April 27: Elephant safaris in Kaziranga National Park (KNP) will remain closed for visitors from April 30, 2021, for the tourist season 2020-2021, given the COVID surge in the state.

The closure notice was announced through a general notice issued by the Divisional Forest Officer, Eastern Assam Wildlife Division, Bokakhat on Tuesday.

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve were reopened for tourists on October 21 last year after the COVID-triggered the lockdown was lifted. Since then, as many as 1, 98,595 including 570 foreigners visited the park till April 21, 2021.

The Bokakhat district administration had earlier this month, also issued an order making it mandatory for inbound tourists visiting KNP from other states (except Northeastern states) to produce a COVID-19 negative report (test is done within 72 hours before their arrival).

All hotels, lodges, guest houses, restaurant owners have been directed to comply with the order as well.
