A young woman suffered burn injuries in an alleged acid attack while she was returning home on her bicycle in Assam's Dibrugarh town

Assam, Feb 15: A young woman suffered burn injuries in an alleged acid attack while she was returning home on her bicycle in Assam’s Dibrugarh town on the night of Valentine’s day.

As per sources, a 33-year-old woman from Jaypore in Naharkatia who lives with her sister in Dibrugarh was returning from her workplace Sohum Shoppe – a mall in the centre of the town when the incident occurred at a neighbourhood area called Mirzabag under Amolapatty Police outpost.

The accused, Buddhadev Das, a father of two has been arrested by the police.

During investigation it has been learnt that the accused waylaid the victim outside a bakery shop, where he used to work, and fled after throwing acid on her,” Sonowal said, adding, “The accused was later arrested near his residence, a few kilometres away from his house in Shantipara area in the town.”

The survivor has sustained grave injuries especially on the left side of her face. She is currently undergoing treatment in Assam Medical College and Hospital and is in a critical condition.

In this connection, an investigation is underway and no suspects have been apprehended yet.

In the last few years, Assam has also witnessed stray incidents of acid attack including this one in Dibrugarh. In 2019, a 25-year-old female teacher was attacked with acid at Ambari area in Guwahati.
