Tripura, May 26: The Tripura government extended the COVID-19 curfew in the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) areas till June 5 to contain the spread of novel coronavirus said education minister Ratan Lal Nath.
“The restriction will come into effect from May 26 to June 5 for the ULBs and from May 27 till June 5 for other parts of the state. Strict measures will be taken to implement the restrictions imposed by the administration,” Nath said.
Tripura on Tuesday reported a total of 773 fresh cases taking the tally to 47,298 so far. The state also recorded three new fatalities taking the figure to 470 so far.
Nath said that the decision was taken in the state cabinet meeting on Tuesday in view of the worsening COVID-19 situation in the state.
However, all essential services will be exempted from the restriction and shops will open from 6 AM to 12 PM only.
Earlier, the Tripura government had imposed a 10-day corona curfew across the urban local bodies and a night curfew in other parts of the state till May 26.
“In the last seven days of the COVID-19 curfew, the infection rate stood at 21.37 per cent. On the first day of the corona curfew the infection rate was 17.22 per cent which stands at 22.82 per cent,” Nath added.
Speaking further, he said the district has seen a sharp hike in the number of cases. Sepahijala recorded 5.33 per cent positive cases, Khowai 11.06 per cent, Gomati 6.56 per cent, South Tripura 4.33 per cent, Dhalai 5.01 per cent, Unakoti 5.17 and North recorded the lowest 4.05 per cent of positivity rate.

“We have seen that even after ten days of curfew, numbers have increased. The situation demands more measures to fight the outbreak. The government has stepped up efforts to check the spread. Therefore the decision to continue with the 24-hour curfew was taken by the cabinet,” Nath added.
Nath also said that all the private offices will remain closed and for government offices, those engaged with emergency services will only be allowed to attend their duty. The chief secretary Manoj Kumar will issue separate notifications in this regard.
