CM Mamata to inaugurate Majerhat Bridge today

Bengal, 3rd December: Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee will inaugurate the newly constructed Jai Hind Bridge (Majerhat Bridge) on Diamond Harbour Road near Taratala in South Kolkata on Thursday.

CM, who named the bridge Jai Hind Bridge paying tribute to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose with the state government organizing year-long programs celebrating his 125th birth anniversary, will be inaugurating the same at 5 pm from the inaugural program at the intersection of Diamond Harbour Road and NR Avenue.

The bridge, on the arterial Diamond Harbour Road, connects the central part of the city to the southwestern suburbs of Behala and beyond.

Last week, Minister of Public Works Aroop Biswas visited Majerhat Bridge and said “Cable Bridge used to take around 24 months to complete but we have completed the work within a year. We have to stop the work in the middle due to the pending permission from Railway for around 9 months, and 3 months for COVID. We have completed this in a record time. 99.8% of the work has been done. I guess the bridge will open from the first week of December.

The decision to inaugurate the bridge was taken on Saturday, a day after the railway and the PWD, which has implemented the Rs 200-crore project, submitted a “safety certificate” about the structure to the state government.

Senior officials of the PWD said final touches were being given to the structure ahead of the inauguration.

The police said the Bailey bridge, set up parallel to the Majerhat Bridge after the old structure had collapsed in September 2018, will remain open, providing commuters an additional option to travel in the north-south direction.
