Assam Riffles seizes human hair shipment in Mizoram

Mizoram, Feb 8: The Serchhip Battalion of 23 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of Headquarters, Inspector General Assam Rifles (East) caught 120 bags of human hair without any valid documents in General Area Chhungte in Mizoram on 07 February 2021.

A team of Assam Rifles and Customs Department at Champhai District had carried out the operation and uncovered a huge shipment of human hair on specific information. It has been said that the approximate cost of the recovered human hair is Rs.1.8 crore.

In addition to confiscation of Goods, the conveyances, vehicles, or animals that are used in the smuggling activities or in connection with fraudulent availing of drawback are liable to confiscation as per specific provisions in Section 115 of the Customs Act. It is worth noting that the term “Smuggling“, in Customs Act has vast connotations and it means “any act or omission which will render such goods liable for confiscation under Section 111 or 113 of the Customs Act.” In case the goods liable to confiscation are imported in a package, the package and its other contents, if any, are also liable to confiscation as per specific provisions in section 118 of the Customs Act.

According to offences and penal provisions, an officer of Customs can seize any goods, if he has reason to believe that the goods are liable to confiscation, under the Customs Act. The proper officer also has to right to seize any document or things that may be relevant to any proceedings under the Customs Act. However, the person from whom these documents are seized is entitled to make copies of the same.
