Assam: Police arrested seven accused of rape and murder of two teenage tribal girls

Guwahati, June 15: Police have arrested three prime accused along with four others for their alleged involvement in the rape and murder of two teenage tribal girls in Assam, Kokrajhar district.

Two teenage tribal girls – aged 14 and 16 years, found hanging from a tree at Abhayakuti village under Kokrajhar police station on June 11 and police confirmed that they had been raped and killed.

Kokrajhar district Superintendent of Police (SP) Thube Prateek Kumar said that seven persons have been arrested so far and three of them who are the prime accused have confessed to raping the teenage tribal girls aged 14 and 16 years and killing them.

Muzammil Sheikh, Nazibul Sheikh and Farouk Rahman are main accused and they have confessed their crime. Other four persons were also involved in the incident,” Thube Prateek Kumar said.

On the other hand, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted – “Muzammil Sheikh, Nazibul Sheikh and Farouk Rahman arrested for rape and murder of 2 tribal minor girls in Kokrajhar dist. The heinous crime was allegedly committed with the girls first choked to death & their bodies hanged in a tree to hoodwink. @assampolice did a commendable job.”

On June 13, Himanta Biswa Sarma had travelled to the Kokrajhar district and met the victim’s family.

On the other hand, Assam DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Tuesday said in a press conference that, the teenage tribal girls were raped before they were killed.

Three of the accused persons were directly involved in the gang rape and murder of two teenage girls while four others had tried to destroy the evidence and they had tried to mislead police during the investigation,” Special DGP Dr L. R. Bishnoi said.
