50-year-old woman set on fire by land mafias over land dispute in Assam Hojai district:

Guwahati, June 5: In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old woman was set on fire alive by land mafias and the group allegedly attempted to kill her over a land dispute in Assam Hojai district.

Some locals had captured the entire incident in their mobile phones and it went viral on social media.

The victim woman identified as Saleha Begum was later rescued by police and admitted her to the hospital.

The incident took place at Dakshin Samarali area under Murajhar police station in the central Assam district on Thursday where a land mafia group had allegedly tried to grab a land.

When the victim woman and other family members went to the spot and tried to stop the group, they allegedly set the woman on fire and attempted to murder her.

In the video, the group was seen trying to plough the land by using a tractor and the woman and other family members trying to stop the group and attacked each other.

Meanwhile, police has registered two cases at Murajhar police station in connection with the incident.

Kabir Limbu, Officer-in-Charge of Murajhar police station said over the phone that – “We have registered two cases following complaints lodged by both parties in connection with the incident. Earlier, a case (no – 400/2019) was registered in 2019 against a person Rahimuddin who allegedly grabbed the land and he is now absconding.

The police officer further said that an investigation is going on to get to the bottom of everything.

On the other hand, the victim woman Saleha Begum said that the group had threatened to burn her alive.

It is our land. They set me on fire alive and tried to kill me. But I escaped with some injuries,” the victim woman said.
