Assam govt extends curfew in urban areas till June 5, issues new guidelines for rural areas

Assam, May 26: To check the spread of Covid-19, the Assam government extended the curfew in the urban areas of the state till June 5. The state government has also advanced the night curfew in rural areas to 2 pm from the current 6 pm.

Assam has reported 9,784 new Covid-19 cases and 156 deaths in the past 48 hours. Shops, commercial establishments, restaurants, dhabas, government and private offices will shut down by 1 pm on all days in rural areas.

The order was issued by Chief Secretary Jishnu Baruah, who is also the Chairperson of the State Disaster Management Authority.

There will be a total ban on movement of individuals from 2 pm to 5 am daily in rural areas. For urban areas and adjacent areas within a 5 km radius from the periphery of the Municipal Corporation, municipal boards, revenue towns, the directives issued on May 12 and May 15 will remain in force till June 5,” the order said.

In its previous order, the Assam government had revised curfew timing for urban and semi-urban areas from 12 noon to 5 am and the earlier restriction for rural areas was from 6 pm to 5 am.

In the urban areas, all shops and commercial establishments are being shut down at 11 am on all days.

Vehicles are plying following an odd-even formula between 5 am and 12 noon. However, this restriction does not apply to personal cars used for medical emergencies and government vehicles, the order said.

Assam has so far reported 3,75,404 Covid-19 cases while 2,823 people have succumbed to the infection. Currently, the number of active cases is 52,649 and 3,18,585 patients have recuperated from the infection.
