Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Monday laid the foundation of the “first” skill university of eastern India in Darrang district, aimed at imparting training to over 10,000 students in 12 disciplines.

The varsity would be built with a financial outlay of Rs 1,000 crore.

It is expected to be completed by 2026, and will have “understandings” with countries like Germany, Taiwan, South Korea, Israel, Japan, England, he said.

Sonowal said since the present government came to power in 2016, it has taken several decisions to set up institutions of repute in different districts of the state.

He said the Act East Policy has created a “sea of opportunities for students to prepare themselves to reap the dividends of the world“.

Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Chandra Mohan Patowary termed the day as historic, as the process has been initiated for setting up the third skill university in India.

The Assam Skill University will focus on 12 different sectors, namely:

1. Engineering,

2. Management and Entrepreneurship,

3. Agriculture and Forestry,

4. Digital Technology,

5. Textile,

6. Media, Entertainment and Communications,

7. Logistics and Transport,

8. Tourism,

9. Hospitality and Wellness,

10. Development of TVET Practitioner,

11. Retail,

12. Healthcare and Pharmaceuticals and Distance & Lifelong learning…to facilitate skill training.

In addition to these, the university will also provide high-end Graduate (B. Voc.), Postgraduate (M. Voc.) and Research Level Vocational Courses marking the dawn of a new age of Skill Education in the region with the global standard of curriculum.

It will create a new prospect of the skilled manpower in North Eastern Region and BBN Countries.

Government of Assam, with the introduction of this Skill University to create more employment opportunities for the skilled youth, this University will now fulfill the aspirations of the youth of the entire region to get a world-class Skill University at Assam.

The University will take the needed step for up-skilling the youth of Assam and it will prepare the coming generations for the challenges arising from a global economy that India is today, with state-of-the-art infrastructure, right here in our state.
