Assam, May 21: On the occasion of International Tea Day, Former Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Newly elected CM Himanta Biswa Sarma extended their greetings to the people of the State.

CM Himanta Biswa Sarma writes, “My best wishes & greetings on #InternationalTeaDay. Tea is intrinsic to the lives of billions across the globe. Assam is proud to play an important role in producing more than 700 million kgs of the world’s favourite beverage & provide moments of happiness in the lives of the tea drinkers. Assam continues to work for upgrading the lives of the tea community who deserves credit for sustaining this wonderful industry. The small tea farmers have contributed immensely to the rural economy of Assam. GoA wishes all tea growers & drinkers a very happy #InternationalTeaDay.”

Assam is known as the land of tea and for being an avid tea-drinking population, so it’s no surprise that Guwahati is full of amazing tea shops, cafes and bars to while away the hours in.

The world will join hands to celebrate International Tea Day on May 21, 2021. The day is observed primarily with a view to increasing consumption of tea. The UN has said tea has medicinal value and has the potential of bringing health benefits to people. In 2019, the United Nations (UN) recognized the importance of one of the world’s oldest beverages.

Marking the celebration, the UN took to Twitter to extend their greeting: “Tea is central to many cultures, and it contributes to employment, exports earnings & food security.”

Not only has the UN recognized the medicinal property of tea, but it has also considered the beverage as an important ingredient of its Sustainable Development Goal programme. It hoped tea will play a pivotal role in eradicating hunger and poverty across the world.

International Tea Day is celebrated by the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).

Prior to this, December 15 was observed as International Tea Day in tea producing nations – Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Vietnam, Indonesia, Kenya, Malawi, Malaysia, Uganda, India and Tanzania. The reason for the UN celebrating May 21 as International Tea Day is that the season of tea production begins in May in most of the tea-producing countries.

This one beverage is undoubtedly India’s cup of tea. It may have been discovered in China centuries ago, but Indians give the Chinese tough competition when it comes to drinking – and loving – their daily chai.

The consumption volume of tea in India was approximately one billion kilograms during FY20. However, it’s only in the past few years, tea has started gaining a luxurious patina, unlike coffee, which was considered a stylish drink from the very beginning.
