Guwahati, May 02: Counting of votes will be held today in the high-stakes Assam Assembly election which was held in the shadow of the raging Covid pandemic. As counting begins in Assam, early trends and names of the candidates leading and trailing in the Assam Assembly poll 2021 will start tricking in shortly. An average 82.04 percent voter turnout was recorded in the three-phase election to 126 assembly constituencies in Assam.

The voting for the Assam Assembly elections, which was held in three phases — March 27, April 1, and April 6, was concluded on April 6 with an impressive turnout of 82.04%.

In Assam, the BJP is in alliance with the regional parties of Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), forming the ‘Mitrajot’. The Congress formed ‘Mahajot’ (Grand Alliance) with All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M), Communist Party of India (Marxist–Leninist) Liberation (CPI (ML)L), Anchalik Gana Morcha (AGM) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD).

  • Assam Public Health Engineering Minister Rihon Daimary of BPF loses Udalguri seat to UPPL’s Gobinda Chandra Basumatary, a former extremist leader of NDFB by 4,851 votes.
  • Prasanta Phukan of BJP hs won Dibrugarh. In the 2016 Assam Assembly elections, Prasanta Phukan of BJP won in this seat by defeating Chandra Kanta Barua of INC by a margin of 27,374 votes which was 26.11% of the total votes polled in the constituency. BJP had a vote share of 61.02% in 2016 in the seat.
  • Independent candidate and activists Akhil Gogoi has won from Sibsagar Constituency. He was in the lead since the counting began.
  • As the BJP makes its way towards victory in Assam, party leader Jitendra Singh thanked the people of the state, saying the party realized the benefit of the government both at the state and the Centre.
  • Himanata Biswa Sarma wins Jalukbari constituency. Sarma took to Twitter to announce his win and thanked the people of Jalukbari, PM Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and party president JP Nadda

  • Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal has said, “Counting is still underway but it is clear that BJP is forming the government once again. This has been possible because of the public cooperation.”

  • Nandita Das of Indian National Congress leading by 36752 votes in the Boko constituency in Assam.
  • BJP’s Himanta Biswa Sarma is leading in the constituency by a margin of 11,415 votes. Sarma has amaassed 14254 votes and has left INC’s Romen Chandra Borthakur behind who is trailing at 2839 votes.
  • Assam saw a polling turnout in the first, second, and third phases as 79.93%, 80.96%, and 82.33% respectively.   • The ruling Mitrajot or the NDA, spearheaded by the BJP, is leading in 76 seats, making its way to the majority mark of 64 out of 126 assembly constituencies. The Congress’ grand alliance (Mahajoth) is ahead in 41 seats, according to initial trends available from counting of postal ballots in Assam.
  • Assam Forest Minister Parimal Suklabaidya is currently leading in Dholai and AGP working president Keshab Mahanta is leading in Kaliabor constituency.
