Assam: 1 dead, 140 hospitalized due to suspected food poisoning at CM’s program

Assam, Feb 3: A youth died and over 140 others, including children, were hospitalized due to suspected food poisoning during a government event in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

Many people fell ill after consuming food served at the inaugural program of the first academic session of Diphu Medical College and Hospital in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Tuesday. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma were also present at the event.

According to the reports, several attendees fell ill after consuming the packaged foods served at the event.

At least 145 people were admitted to the Diphu civil hospital Assam, after they displayed symptoms of food poisoning such as stomach ache and vomiting.

Among the sick, a youth, identified as Kangbura Dey, died on Tuesday night at the government-run hospital.

Health Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that 145 patients had reported symptoms and had to be hospitalized. “Out of them, 28 patients have been discharged and 117 patients are still in the hospital under treatment,” Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

Meanwhile, the Karbi Anglong district administration has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
