AIUDF MLA Karim Uddin Barbhuiya took oath in the Sanskrit language in Assam Legislative Assembly

Assam, May 21: Karim Uddin Barbhuiya popularly known as Saju has taken oath as a Member of the Legislative Assembly. He caught many surprises as he read the Oath in Sanskrit. Karim Uddin Barbhuiya’s fluency in Sanskrit also caught many eyes.

For the three-day session, the first sitting of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly began on Friday. On the first day of the session, all 126 newly elected MLAs were administered the oath of secrecy.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, his predecessor Sarbananda Sonowal, jailed anti-CAA leader Akhil Gogoi, and former Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia were among those who took oath on Friday as MLAs of the 15th Assam Legislative Assembly.

Sarma, Sonowal, Saikia, Gogoi, and most of the other MLAs took oath in Assamese, while many took the pledge in Bangla. Some of the members also swore in Bodo, Sanskrit, English, and Nepali languages.

Karim Uddin Barbhuiya is considered the right–hand man of AIUDF supremo Badaruddin Ajmal. AIUDF went into the general election to the Assembly in 2021 in alliance with the All India National Congress-led Mahajot.

MLA Akhil Gogoi, who came for the swearing-in ceremony from prison with special permission from the judiciary, turned out to be a sensation with people including assembly staff.

Gogoi contested as Independent and became the first Assamese to win an election from behind the bars without any physical campaigning.

He also became the first in Assam Assembly to take oath as a prisoner MLA. He has been arrested on terror and sedition charges after leading a movement against the Citizenship Amendment Act.
