Acrimony over not using Bodo language in official signboards

Assam, May 22: People of the BTC region had witnessed a lot of hue and cry created by certain vested political quarters for alleged discrimination of Bodo language in BTC.

But the reality is that most of the official signboards in the region don’t have the Bodo language. Although the government assured for proper use of the Bodo language as it is the associate official language of the state.

Many people have expressed resentment over the signboard of Kalaigaon Model Hospital is written only in Assamese and similarly in Dimakuchi of the same district.

They also alleged that many official signboards in the four districts of BTR had skipped the language, which was a glaring example of negligence and domination of the 8th schedule language. The social media platform is flooded with angry reactions over skipping of Bodo language.

Meanwhile, the president of Bodoland Janajati Suraksha Mancha (BJSM), Janaklal Basumatary reacted to the incident and said that this was an attempt to finish the language in the name of changes brought by the BTR agreement.

He raised the question, and also called upon the Bodo leaders to think and act towards finding a solution.

Do the Bodo people want this change? Why are the Bodo people losing their constitutional right to use their language even in writing office signboards within their jurisdiction of administration? This means that they are going to abolish the Sixth Schedule tribal self-rule of BTC. Are the Bodos ready to accept this great change brought by the BTR agreement?” Janaklal Basumatary ask.
