Bengal, Feb 22: Rujira Banerjee, the wife of TMC MP and CM Mamata Banerjee’s nephew Abhishek Banerjee, on Monday, responded to the CBI’s summons in the alleged coal smuggling scam and asked the central agency to question her at her residence on Tuesday.
The CBI has accepted Rujira Banerjee’s request for examination at her residence on Tuesday in the coal smuggling case. The CBI had on Sunday asked Rujira Banerjee to join the probe. The central agency will now be handing over a new notice to Rujira Banerjee in the coal smuggling case.
A team of CBI officials had visited the residence of Abhishek Banerjee on Sunday to deliver the summons but Rujira Banerjee was not present. A telephonic conversation took place between Rujira Banerjee and the CBI team that reached her Kolkata residence.
The CBI wants to question Abhishek Banerjee’s wife Rujra Narula Banarjee on Sunday itself and has asked for time from her. Rujira Banerjee responded to the summons on Monday and asked the CBI to visit her residence between 11 am and 3 pm on Tuesday.
In a reply to the CBI summons, a copy of which is available with India Today TV, Rujira has informed the investigators that: “You may visit my residence, as per your convenience between 11 am and 3 pm tomorrow i.e. 23 February 2021.“
Rujira said, “I am unaware of the reason for being called for questioning or the subject matter of the investigation.”
“You are requested to kindly inform me of your schedule,” Rujira Banerjee said.

CBI carried out searches on Friday at 13 locations in four districts of poll-bound West Bengal in connection with the coal smuggling case. CBI raids were carried out in Purulia, Bankura, Pashchim Bardhaman and Kolkata.
The CBI raids on Friday included premises of Amiya Steel Pvt Ltd in Kolkata and Bankura and that of Joydeb Mandal, the alleged deputy of the suspected kingpin of the racket Anup Manjhi.
Sources in the CBI claim that the agency, during an investigation of the case came across the alleged role of Abhishek Banerjee’s wife, based on which they decided to question her. Sources also claim that during recent raids and recording of statements, CBI came across material hinting the involvement of Rujira Banerjee.
