6 washed away in flood water in Meghalaya, rescue continues 

Meghalaya September 23: In a tragic incident in Meghalaya South West Khasi Hills district, at least 6 persons including a child were washed away by gushing flood water. The incident took place around the Tinhiang river. The incident took place when the vehicle they were travelling in, stumbled into the river as they were trying to cross it. The vehicle was striding through the river water as the bridge above it had collapsed a few months back. The victims hailed from the Mawjai village in Warsan Lyngdoh area. A rescue team from the State Disaster Response Force as well as the fire and emergency service personnel have been instructed to begin with the search and rescue operation. The rescue team has so far retrieved the body of Lading Gun L Malawi. The bodies of her two daughters are still missing. Another woman, 24-year-old, Ibashisha Lindo, her baby boy Daman Lindo and 45-year-old Ferdinand Mirthawg, are still missing.

It is reported that, soon after the incident took place, the local villagers were trying to retrieve the bodies even before the State Administration could take any steps. There were 8 people in total who were trying to cross the river to go to the District headquarters. Out of the total 8, two of them managed to save themselves.

As Meghalaya has been receiving continuous rainfall, it re-construction of the bridge could not be initiated through the citizens are warned against the dangers of crossing the river through the waters. Due to heavy rainfall many other instances of accidents, landslides, flood and road blocking, are being reported from the state of Meghalaya. There are several cases of flood and property damage as well. As for this case, the rescue work still continues.
